What To Do When You are Charged with DUI

Being charged with DUI is a serious offence for everyone. Driving under the influence does not only endanger your life but others as well.

If you’re charged with DUI here is a list of things to consider,
You have rights

The patrolman will read you the “Miranda rights”, remember that you have the right to remain silent and you should exercise that right. Anything you say once arrested will be used to you on the court of law and since you are being charged with DUI you will need to control yourself and comply with what the officer is instructing you. Remember that you can refuse the field sobriety test and the breathalyzer test. When being questioned, do not lie to the officer.

List down what happened

When you get arrested, remember to list down all the details as to what has happened. List down; how many drinks you’ve had, what you’ve told the officer, the details on where you were pulled over, the behavior of the officer, and what the officer instructed you.

Remember that you may be facing other penalties

Drunk driving offense usually entails the suspension of your license and sometimes the confiscation of you license plate. Remember that you can get a restricted license depending on reason and if you have other administrative penalties you have on you.

Call your lawyer

If you have an attorney it is better that you contact him/her first other than your family or relatives. Always remember in detail what happened so he/she can help you as best as he can. If you don’t have a lawyer, call your family and hire an attorney that specializes in DUI cases. Drunk driving defense attorneys is your top priority when getting an attorney.

The best advice anyone can give is to avoid drinking too much when you know you are driving home. If you had a few drinks in and getting home is a problem take a taxi to the nearest motel or even contact a friend to pick you up. Always remember that it is not worth the trouble just to have a few drinks in.
