Types Of Domestic Violence

Posted on Behalf of Attorney Ross Goodman for Family Abuse

Perhaps unknown to some, domestic violence does not take the single form of physically abusing someone with force. No: the law itself defines it to be deeper than that. Its common denominator, however, is the abuser’s need to take control over someone else’s life.
The law of the United States itself prohibits this action regardless of your demography. The sad part though is some of its case can go unmonitored until a concerned citizen decides to notify the legal parties about it.
Domestic violence affects people of all sorts of life which makes it possible to classify and differentiate it common forms.

11.      Physical Abuse
The most common of all, this domestic violence can be defined by the use of physical force by assaulting the victim, either intentionally or accidentally. This may include any of the following:
-Strangulation
-Stalking
-Punching/Hitting
-Threatening
-Grabbing
-Destroying the victims possessions
-Pushing
-Choking
-Depriving the victim basic needs (eating, sleeping, etc)

22.       Emotional/Psychological Abuse
Usual situations can easily be remedied by simple apologies but sometimes, simple words can mess things up. Wrong choice of words can make drastic effects in a person’s well-being especially when the deed becomes repetitive. Emotional/Psychological abuse is when the abuser aims to demean or degrade the victim like:
-Purposely humiliating the victim
-Verbal threats, insults and derogatory sarcasm
-Lying to confuse to play mind games with the victim
-Name-calling of offensive words or terms
-Intimidation
-Attempting to instill fear
-Repeatedly breaking promises
-Restricting the use of communication to the outside world

33.       Sexual Abuse
Often related to physical abuse, sexual abuse happens when the victim was used as a participant in any sexual activity because of force or threat. Even if the victim is a spouse or intimate partner of the abuser, so long as it is against their will, it is therefore considered to be an abuse.
-Use of power/authority to force someone to sleep with him/her
- Degrading/Insulting the partners’ physical appearance
-Sexual act to someone who, on some clinical reasons, cannot decline to the attempt because of their nature
-Sodomy
-Rape with an object

44.       Financial Abuse
When someone attempts to control and/or abuse the victim’s monetary resources, the law then finds it to be a form of domestic violence.
-Demanding the victim to pay all the expenses
-Limiting the victim the economic resources he/she worked
-Strictly instructs the victim on how he/she must use the money
-Withholding the access of money
